What is Breast Screening?

Breast screening uses a test called mammography which involves taking x-rays of the breasts. Screening can help to find breast cancers early when they are too small to see or feel. These cancers are usually easier to treat than larger ones.

Are you eligible for Breast Screening?

Women aged from 50 up to their 71st birthday in England.

Breast screening for women over 70 years is available upon request.

How often should you attend Breast Screening?

Under the NHS Breast Screening Programme, eligible women usually receive their first routine invitation for breast cancer screening between the ages of 50 and 53 and will normally be invited every three years until their 71st birthday.

When will you receive your Breast Screening results?

You will usually get your results within 2 weeks of your breast screening appointment. They will be sent to you by letter.

They will also be sent to the GP surgery you are registered with.

Rarely you may need to have another mammogram to get a clearer picture of your breasts. Your results would be sent after this second breast screening appointment.

Can men get Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is cancer that’s found in the breasts or breast tissue in the chest. Anyone can get it, including men.
