What is cervical screening?

Cervical screening, also known as a smear test, is a procedure to check the health of the cervix and help prevent cervical cancer.

This appointment is usually booked with a practice nurse. If, for any reason, we are unable to perform your smear test, we will refer you to the hospital for the procedure.

Are you eligible for cervical screening?

All women and individuals with a cervix aged 25 to 64 are encouraged to attend regular cervical screening. You will receive a letter in the post inviting you to book an appointment.

How often should you attend a cervical screening appointment?

This may depend on the results of your previous cervical smear, but the standard recall schedule is:

Please not you will always receive a letter from NHS when your are due for a cervical screening.

If you are aged 25-50, you are eligible to attend every 3 years.

If you are aged 50-65, you are eligible to attend every 5 years.

If you are over 65, you will only be recalled if your final cervical screening is abnormal.

If you are HIV+, you are eligible for yearly smears.

If you receive an abnormal result, your recall time may change. However, there’s no need to worry—you will be informed of this through a letter. Your GP surgery will also be notified and will recall you as needed.

When will you received your cervical screening results?

Results typically take 2 to 6 weeks to arrive. If you’ve been waiting longer than expected, contact your GP surgery for updates on when you might receive them.
